Ingredients

For the filling

  • 6 cups apples (about 6 medium, peeled, cored, and cut into 1/4 inch thick slices) Use a mix of different apple varieties for a more complex flavor.
  • 3/4 cup sugar You can substitute some sugar for brown sugar for a deeper flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon For added flavor, try mixing in ginger or allspice.
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 pastry for double pie crust Store-bought crust can be used for convenience.
  • 2-3 tablespoons butter Cut into small pieces and scattered over the apple filling.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 425°F.
  • Line a 9-inch pie plate with the bottom crust and trim the edges so they are even. Set it aside.
  • In a bowl, mix the apple slices, sugar, flour, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg, and lemon juice until well combined.
  • Spoon the apple mixture into the crust-lined pie plate, spreading it evenly. Dot the top with small pieces of butter.
  • Roll out the second pie crust and place it over the apple filling. Press and crimp the edges to seal.
  • Cut slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.

Baking

  • Brush the top of the pie with an egg wash and sprinkle additional sugar over it.
  • Bake in the preheated oven at 425°F for 15 minutes.
  • Lower the temperature to 375°F and continue baking for 30 minutes or until apples are tender and the crust is golden brown.

Cooling

  • Let the pie cool on a cooling rack before serving.

Notes

Serve warm or at room temperature, and consider pairing it with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. For a unique touch, sprinkle cinnamon on top.
